Thursday, July 2, 2026: Spain impose control, Portugal survive Croatia, Switzerland remove Algeria

Spain dominate Austria 3-0, Portugal beat Croatia 2-1 in an emotional match, and Switzerland earn their first World Cup knockout win since 1938 by defeating Algeria.

The story of the day

July 2 brought three very different round-of-32 matches: a Spanish demonstration, a tense European classic between Portugal and Croatia, and a Swiss qualification built on discipline. The day also fixed a major last-16 clash, Spain against Portugal, while Algeria and Croatia left the tournament with heavy regrets.

Spain opened the day with a 3-0 win over Austria. Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice, Pedro Porro added another goal, and La Roja looked as if they were drawing Austria's press in only to play through it. Ralf Rangnick's high-intensity plan was dismantled by Spain's technical quality: short exits, one-touch passing, runs into half-spaces and a defence that gave almost nothing away.

Spain's defensive performance mattered as much as the goals. Austria failed to register a shot on target, and Unai Simon extended a shutout run that is becoming a title argument. Lamine Yamal looked sharper, Alex Baena again gave the team coherence, and Spain move forward with a clear sense of acceleration.

Portugal-Croatia then delivered the most emotional match of the day. Ivan Perisic put Croatia ahead, Cristiano Ronaldo equalised from the penalty spot after a video review, and Goncalo Ramos scored late for a 2-1 Portugal win. Croatia thought they had equalised at the end through Josko Gvardiol, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Portugal advance, Ronaldo finally scores in a World Cup knockout match, and what may be Luka Modric's final World Cup appearance leaves a melancholy trace.

Finally, Switzerland beat Algeria 2-0 in Vancouver. Breel Embolo opened the scoring after Johan Manzambi's work, then Dan Ndoye doubled the lead just after halftime. Algeria had possession, but few genuine chances. Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler locked down the centre of the pitch, and Switzerland recorded their first World Cup knockout win since 1938.

Tournament stakes

Spain now look like one of the tournament's most serious signals. They did not simply win. They neutralised an Austrian side whose identity depends on pressing and energy. When a team can win 3-0 while appearing to control both penalty areas, it enters the title conversation.

Portugal move forward with a mixture of relief and questions. Ronaldo scored a historic goal, Ramos showed the value of the bench, and the team held through a very tense match. But Croatia found a route back, and Portugal will need to be more stable against Spain.

Switzerland may be less spectacular, but their qualification changes their dimension. Finally winning a World Cup knockout match after an 88-year wait gives a particular mental strength. The next opponent, Colombia or Ghana, will show whether this solidity can become a real run.

Major nations

Spain reach the last 16 with the best current combination: collective control, technical quality, youth that accelerates the game and an almost impermeable defence. La Roja did not begin the tournament at full volume, but they seem to be choosing the right moment to rise.

Portugal won a match that could have tipped a generation. Ronaldo, at 41, converted a penalty carrying huge historical weight. But Roberto Martinez's decision to substitute him later, followed by Ramos's winner, showed that this team may have to live with several truths at once: respect its captain, but win with the whole squad.

Croatia leave without shame, but with a painful ending. Perisic gave hope, Modric still carried the rhythm in spells, and the disallowed goal will remain part of the conversation. After the podium finishes of 2018 and 2022, this exit probably closes a huge chapter.

Breakouts and outsiders

Johan Manzambi is becoming one of the most interesting names in the knockout phase. His work for Switzerland's opener broke Algeria's plan and gave Murat Yakin exactly the match he wanted: compact block, clean transitions and emotional control.

Algeria exit after already spending a lot of energy to escape the groups. The Switzerland match showed their limits: plenty of possession, but too little penetration. Riyad Mahrez and the senior players pushed, but never found the action that would put doubt back into Swiss minds.

Austria leave with a severe tactical lesson. Their press worked in parts of the competition, but Spain turned it into a weakness. At this level, intensity needs a second solution when the opponent can play above the pressure.

What to watch next

July 3 will complete the round of 32 with Australia-Egypt, Argentina-Cape Verde and Colombia-Ghana. Because those matches are late from a European perspective, the full daily report should only be written once every result is confirmed.

Argentina will face a historic Cape Verde side that went unbeaten in the group stage, while Colombia and Ghana will compete for a meeting with Switzerland. Australia-Egypt opens the day with two teams capable of turning a tight match into a battle of endurance.
